Fourth Annual Underwater Monopoly Fundraiser

The 4th Annual Underwater Monopoly Fundraiser, "sponsored" by
Scuba Madness Inc of Florence, SC, took place on April 21,2001 at the newly
renovated YMCA. Six teams representing six charities: Florence
Area Humane Society, YMCA, Hartsville Rescue, Pee Dee Coalition,
DAN-PADI, and the Boys & Girls Club, met poolside at 10:00 am and
rolled dice until 5:00 pm. The teams pitted strategy, cunning, and a
sharp eye against each other vying for 1st place. At 50 minute
intervals scuba equipment was donned, team members traded advice and
places. Property was purchased quickly,
jail was visited frequently and the negatively buoyant pieces moved with
ease. Hand Signals and underwater slates were the communication
devices to the players while an underwater camera and "hi-tech"
underwater communication mask updated the onlookers. Poolside
visitor could watch live images of the game on TV poolside, take a
Discover Scuba lesson, participate in a raffle, silent auction, have their
scuba question answered, see beautiful puppies ready for adoption and
enjoy a bounteous array of food and beverages. In the end,
Hartsville Rescue was declared the 4th Annual Underwater Monopoly Champs
but the winners were all the charities that were represented (and the
puppy that was adopted) by the teams and concerned divers.
